Measuring Lamp Shade Size

The width of the lamp shade is equal to the height of the base of the lamp.

If you are happy with the size of the shade you are replacing just measure the old one with a ruler or retractable tape measure. For a round base measure straight across. To choose the right lamp shade width measure your lamp base and multiply by two. Bottom denotes the diameter or width of the bottom of the lamp shade.

Lastly the lampshade must be wider than the widest part of the lamp base. Measure diagonally for a square base. The height of a table lamp shade should be approximately the height of the base to bottom of socket x 60 up to 70. Place the measuring tape across the top diameter in the center.

The height of the lampshade should be 2 3 the height of the lamp base. If your shade has a square shape measure one side of the square from corner to corner for the proper measurement. Top denotes the diameter or width if measuring a square lamp shade of the top of the lamp shade. The widest part of your shade should be at least a half inch wider than the widest part of your base on each side. And when you re considering width don t forget location. Hold your tape measure at one end of the top edge of the lamp shade and pull it across to the opposite edge in the right in the middle. The height of a floor lamp shade should be approximately the height of the base x 30 to 40.
